Marco Vigato
Marco M. Vigato is an Italian researcher, author, and explorer who has spent the past twenty years investigating the origins of civilization and the enduring mysteries of the ancient world. He is the author of The Empires of Atlantis, published by Inner Traditions, and a frequent contributor to print and online publications on archaeology, ancient history, and unexplained aspects of the human past.
Olmec Origins and the Beginnings of Mesoamerican Civilization
Around 1200 BCE, a remarkable civilization emerged on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, building monumental ceremonial centers, carving colossal stone sculptures, and producing exquisite works in jadeite and serpentine: the Olmecs. Since the first excavations at La Venta, San Lorenzo, and Tres Zapotes in the 1940s, the Olmecs have been regarded as Mesoamerica’s earliest complex society and the region’s archetypal “mother culture.”
But were they truly?
New evidence, particularly from central and western Mexico, is challenging long-held assumptions about the origins of Olmec culture. Did the Olmecs truly lay the foundations of Mesoamerican civilization, or did they instead inherit much of their culture from an earlier, still mysterious source?
This possibility may help explain both the seemingly sudden appearance of Olmec civilization and the presence of countless enigmatic megalithic monuments of unknown age scattered across Mexico and Central America. Could these remains preserve traces of a forgotten pre-Olmec civilization whose very memory was erased and appropriated by the peoples who came after it?
Drawing on more than a decade of exploration across Mexico and Central America, Marco Vigato presents evidence from archaeological research and field investigations at sites including Mitla, Teotitlán del Valle, and San Miguel Ixtapan. Together, these discoveries invite a provocative reassessment of when—and where—the story of Mesoamerican civilization truly began.
Marco holds degrees from Bocconi University in Milan and an MBA from Harvard Business School. A native of Italy, he lives and works in Mexico City.
He is the founder and president of the ARX Project – Association for Archaeological Research and Exploration, through which he has led, participated in, and sponsored numerous research projects and expeditions across Mexico and Mesoamerica. His work has focused particularly on the civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica, archaeological exploration, and the application of non-invasive technologies to the investigation of ancient sites.
He has appeared as an expert on ancient Mesoamerica in numerous television documentaries, interviews, and media productions for Netflix, History, and Discovery Channel.
